Your domain. In your name.
The domain is the one bit of a website that's properly yours. So it gets registered to you, not us, from day one. We pay the renewal and keep an eye on it.
Already own one? Most businesses do. We don't move it anywhere. We either get access from you or ask you to change two settings, and point it at the new site. Your email keeps working. We check that before we touch anything.
Need one? We register it in your name, usually your business name with .co.nz on the end. The cost is in the $49. If your first pick is taken we'll suggest others before you approve the draft, so you don't end up with something clumsy.
Want email on it, like hello@yourbusiness.co.nz instead of a Gmail? We'll set it up. The mailbox is a few dollars a month from the provider and we'll tell you the price first.
Why "in your name" matters.
- Some web companies register your domain to themselves. Fall out with them and you lose your address, plus every card, van and Google listing that has it on.
- In your name, you can change your web person, your host or your email any time without asking anyone.
- It's also just the rule for .nz domains. The registrant is supposed to be whoever's actually using it.
Questions.
- Why .co.nz and not .com?
- Because you're a New Zealand business and your customers are searching from New Zealand. If you already own the .com we'll point it at the same site.
- My old web guy has my domain.
- Common. We'll show you how to ask for it back. The .nz rules are on your side. If they won't play ball we register a fresh one and move on.
- Do you keep renewing it if I cancel?
- No, it's yours from then on. The registrar emails you when it's due and we'll remind you at handover.
